Charity Bike Ride

Staff from across all White Knight’s sites, plus families and friends gathered at the Savill Centre in Windsor Great Park on a sunny Sunday morning, 21st June 2009, to take part in White Knight’s 3rd annual “Knight Ride”. This year, the nominated charity was Asthma UK and at just after 11.00 the group set off on the 10 mile route which had been planned by Peter Tomlins and Robert Adams. Following route markers, carefully place by Peter, the cyclists wended their way through the beautiful scenery of Windsor Great Park, passing through the Deer Park and crossing the top of the Long Walk at the Copper Horse on the first loop of the day, whilst the non-cyclists found a spot on the grass to cheer them on.
At the Polo Ground, some of the younger participants called it a day, as their parents tired of pushing them up the hills, deciding ice creams with the spectators were a much better idea! A carriage driving event was being held together with the Windsor Cup polo tournament, which some paused to watch before heading downwards to Virginia Water. More spectacular views and more pedestrians to avoid here, plus a few more hills to negotiate before returning to the Savill Centre.
Alex Brontu and Andrew Scassolini were pipped to the post by an enthusiastic Harry Jones, age 12, who claimed the Yellow Jersey as the “race” winner! However, Alex went on to join a smaller group of adventurers for a further ride to Runneymede and back. Others, having taken a more leisurely pace, picnicked in the sunshine or took advantage of the café before returning to the polo ground to watch the tournament or heading home.
All in all, a most enjoyable day, most importantly raising over £1000 for Asthma UK. A big thank you to everyone who sponsored us!
